What's In....What's Out?


 As Alabama moves to the College and Career Standards( Common Core State Standards), I want teachers to receive information that will directly impact their instruction.  This has been the most helpful document that will give teachers a snap shot of "What's In" their course of study and "What's Out" of their course of study.

- Expand understanding of equations; gain an understanding of the equals sign and use symbols for unknown values in equations.
- Facts to 20 – using strategies such as counting on, making ten, and compensation with known facts

- Expand understanding of place value as related to two-digit addition and subtraction









 Number and Operations in Base Ten
- Exploration of special cases of adding with two-digit numbers with justification through various representations.









Measurement and Data
- In measurement, focus is on measuring length indirectly with a variety of units.
- Telling and writing time in hours and half hours.
- The focus for data consists of sorting and classifying in order to ask and answer questions about a set of data, not on formal representations of the data.

Geometry
- Expand understanding of solids
- Expand understanding of shapes and their attributes to include partitioning of circles and rectangles into equal shares – halves, fourths and quarter

















Operations and Algebraic Thinking
- Emphasis on representing and using a variety of types of problems to develop understanding of addition and subtraction, such as, adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart and comparing.  .
- Mental math: ways to find missing parts in 3-digit addition and subtraction










Number and Operations in Base Ten
- Emphasis on place value as the approach to thinking about operations with muti-digit numbers, such as adding and subtracting multiples of 10
- Skip counting by 5, 10, 100 to 1,000
- Fluently and  subtract within 100
- Subtracting 2-digit numbers on a number line


Measurement and Data
- Adding and subtracting in measurement
- Adding 2-digit numbers on a number line
- Comparing lengths
- Graphing lengths





Geometry
- Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes. 
- Angles
- Geometry focuses on attributes of shapes, such as what makes a triangle a triangle rather than just recognizing a triangle. Shapes also used to introduce informal work with fractions.

 What are the Implications for the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics?

Instructional Implications
•Students –a K-12 articulated learning trajectory based on college and career readiness.


•Parents –assurance that if the K-12 learning trajectory is successfully implemented and followed their child will be prepared for success in college and their chosen career.


•Teachers/Administrators –will be provided a clear, explicit, and rigorous guide on how to move a student along their learning trajectory with alerts when that student falls above or below the trajectory supported by a resource repository of best practice populated by collaborating states and our national and international education partners.


•Higher Education –provides an opportunity to develop a more clearly articulated relationship with K-12 in the preparation of future teachers and administrators and continued learning opportunities for current teachers and administrators.


•Business & Industry –assurance that a graduate from an Alabama high school is prepared for college and career opportunities without the need for remedial education or training.

Alabama is making great strides through the Common Core Initiative.  The State Department is working on tools that will assist teachers in making the transition smoothly.  In order to implement these standards effectively across the state, stellar professional development and opportunities to deepen content knowledge must occur.

  1. I agree that professional development needs to play a huge part in this. I think that especially with older teachers like myself, professional development in new methodoligies is key. Math instruction has perphaps changed more greatly than other subjects over the years. It is not just the professional development, but the sustained support that is important to teachers trying to implement the new programs. That is why people like you are so important, as you help to support your teachers and reach out to them through your digital resources to help them. Kudos!

  2. It seems interesting to me that the majority of things that are "out" of the core curriculum are things that students use math for outside of the classroom. While it is entirely possible that they will end up learning these things anyway from parents and other adults, this makes it difficult to relate the subject material to students, in my opinion. I realize these are young students, but I find it hard to believe that they would rather learn something they see as "math class" versus skills they know they'll need later in life. What are your thoughts on this trend?

  3. We have been working on curriculum guides for the new CC standards. It is going to be a big change in the courses at high school. We all have a long row ahead. Good luck to all of you.
