As part of the Fact vs. Fluency debate across school systems, I wanted to incorporate some strategies to promote math number fluency within the K-2 classrooms. In order for teachers to become increasingly aware of Number Talks in the classroom, I wanted to share some information that can help teachers understand the importance of giving students opportunities to count and share their thinking.
Subitizing
What is subitizing?!
Subitizing is the ability to look at a number pattern and instantly recognize that number without counting. Try these activities to help students build this foundational skill:
This activity would work for kindergarten and first grade. Students must count fish and identify the number that matches. This activity would provide a great jumping off point for discussing how to group objects in order to count them quickly and easily. This activity falls under the common core standards of Counting and Cardinality (K.CC.1, K.CC.4) and Number and Operations in Base Ten (1.NBT.1, 2.NBT.2).
